Grading & Earthwork in Bernalillo

Grading & Earthwork Built to Bernalillo Design Standards

Bernalillo sits at approximately 5,050 feet in high-desert country along US 550, Camino del Pueblo (NM 313), and the I-25 corridor. New residential, commercial, and roadway projects require precise mass grading, excavation, embankment, and subgrade preparation that meet Town of Bernalillo Design Standards Chapter 222. Geotechnical reports must include subsurface conditions, AASHTO soil classification, estimated R-value, and a 20-year recommended pavement section. Compaction testing is required at completion of site grading (cuts and fills), at completion of subgrade preparation, and after final lot grading. As a licensed contractor serving Bernalillo, we deliver grading and earthwork that meets Town Engineer and Public Works expectations for testing, inspection, and long-term performance.

Town of Bernalillo Design Standards — Geotech R-Value Required

Design Standards Chapter 222 & Standard Drawings

Town of Bernalillo Design Standards Chapter 222 govern grading, curbs and gutters, paving, drainage, and drainage structures. Street right-of-way and pavement widths are set in Table 107-1 (local 50'/32'; collector 68'/48'). Pavement structural design for local and collector streets conforms to Standard Drawing 107-2; a geotechnical report with estimated R-value is required before design consideration.

Compaction Testing & Subgrade Preparation

Inspection is required at completion of preliminary clearing, grubbing, and site grading (cuts and fills), with compaction testing of fill material. Compaction tests are required at completion of subgrade preparation and after final grading of lots. Under roads, sidewalks, and driveways, the top 12 inches of trench backfill is commonly compacted to a minimum of 95% of maximum density (ASTM D1557).

Geotechnical Report & R-Value

A geotechnical report must be provided prior to design consideration and must include subsurface soil conditions, AASHTO soil classification, estimated R-value, 20-year recommended pavement section for each roadway classification, and infiltration rates of the native soil. The designing engineer submits existing subgrade bearing values and the proposed structural pavement design to the Town.

High-Desert Climate & Drainage

Bernalillo’s high-desert climate brings intense sun, temperature extremes, and monsoon storms. Site grading and drainage must consider the drainage pattern of adjacent improved and unimproved property and treat upstream areas, where appropriate, as though fully improved. Positive drainage and erosion control protect finished grades and subsequent pavement.

Bernalillo Grading & Earthwork Process

How Grading & Earthwork Projects Run in Bernalillo

A clear process designed around Town of Bernalillo Design Standards Chapter 222, Standard Drawings, and Public Works inspection checkpoints.

1
Step 1

Project Scope & Site Evaluation

We review the grading plan, geotechnical data (including R-value), cut/fill balance, drainage requirements, and Chapter 222 standards, then define the full earthwork scope under our NM CID license.

2
Step 2

Design Coordination & Plan Package

Plans address mass grading, embankment, subgrade preparation, and drainage to Town Design Standards and Standard Drawings. Geotechnical report and structural pavement design are coordinated for Town review.

3
Step 3

Permits, Approvals & Pre-Construction

We secure required approvals, confirm material sources and testing protocols, and schedule work around development phasing, weather windows, and Town inspection checkpoints.

4
Step 4

Clearing, Earthwork, Compaction & Testing

Crews clear and grub, excavate and place embankment with required compaction testing of fill, prepare subgrade with compaction tests, proof-roll as needed, and coordinate density/moisture testing for Town inspection.

5
Step 5

Final Grades, Inspection & Close-Out

Finished grades are verified; final lot grading includes compaction tests. Punch list, final construction report with certification, testing reports, and as-built drawings support Town acceptance.

Our Albuquerque headquarters is approximately 20–30 minutes via I-25 or local routes, allowing reliable mobilization and consistent project supervision for Bernalillo grading and earthwork sites.

What standards govern grading and earthwork in Bernalillo?

Town of Bernalillo Design Standards Chapter 222 govern grading, curbs and gutters, paving, drainage, and drainage structures. Street right-of-way and pavement widths are established in Table 107-1. Pavement design for local and collector streets conforms to Standard Drawing 107-2. A geotechnical report with estimated R-value is required prior to design consideration.

What inspection and compaction testing is required?

Inspection is required at completion of preliminary clearing, grubbing, and site grading (cuts and fills), with compaction testing of fill material. Compaction tests are required at completion of subgrade preparation and after final grading of lots. Under roads, sidewalks, and driveways, the top 12 inches of trench backfill is commonly compacted to a minimum of 95% of maximum density (ASTM D1557).

What must a geotechnical report include?

A copy of the geotechnical report must be provided prior to design consideration and must include subsurface soil conditions, AASHTO soil classification, estimated R-value, 20-year recommended pavement section for each roadway classification, and infiltration rates of the native soil.

How does local climate affect grading?

At approximately 5,050 feet in high-desert conditions, intense sun, temperature extremes, and monsoon storms require positive drainage, moisture conditioning, and erosion control so finished grades and subgrades perform before base and pavement are placed. Site grading must consider adjacent drainage patterns.

Duration depends on cut/fill volume, soil conditions, weather, and Town review/inspection schedules. After plans and approvals are in place, mid-size residential or commercial grading packages are often measured in weeks. We publish a realistic schedule at contract.
