Culvert Installation
Proper culvert sizing, bedding, and installation for roadway drainage crossings — designed to convey storm flows and protect the road structure for years.
Culverts: The Infrastructure Nobody Sees Until It Fails
Undersized or improperly installed culverts are one of the leading causes of road washout in New Mexico's monsoon season. A culvert that cannot pass the design storm flow causes water to overtop the road, saturate the fill embankment, and cause catastrophic failure. We size culverts to convey design storm flows and install them with proper bedding, backfill, and headwall protection to prevent erosion at the inlet and outlet.
- Culvert type and size selection based on hydraulic calculations or engineer specifications
- Proper trench excavation, bedding preparation, and zone-of-bedding compaction
- Inlet and outlet headwall construction with riprap or concrete apron erosion protection
- Backfill compaction in lifts with nuclear density testing to required density

Proper Bedding Makes the Difference
Culvert failure most often occurs at joints or from differential settlement — both caused by improper bedding. We install culverts on properly compacted granular bedding, haunched to the springline per NMDOT standard details, with zone-of-bedding compaction verified by density testing.

Culvert Installation Scopes
Complete culvert systems from excavation to final grading.
Corrugated Metal Pipe (CMP)
Galvanized or aluminized corrugated metal culverts for drainage crossings — cost-effective, readily available, and field-repairable. Installed with proper bedding and end treatment.
Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP)
High-strength reinforced concrete culverts for larger crossings and applications requiring superior structural capacity — specified for NMDOT projects and municipal rights-of-way.
HDPE Culverts
High-density polyethylene corrugated pipe for drainage applications where corrosion resistance and flexibility are required — lighter and easier to handle in remote locations.
Headwalls & End Treatments
Cast-in-place or precast concrete headwalls, wingwalls, and riprap apron protection at culvert inlets and outlets to prevent scour and protect the embankment.
